This Dries Van Noten ensemble is from the much celebrated Spring / Summer 2014 Collection. Van Noten showcased a dreamy presentation that covered just about every sartorial realm one might want to explore, including traditional indigenous embroidered textiles, natural curiosities such as seashells used as adornments, and barbed wire prints on textiles, most certainly a nod to modern urban decay.
“Spring be damned…" wrote Tim Blanks for Vogue. He went on to reference the “...Byzantine gold, Ottoman tassels, and embroideries that set the night sky against barbed wire as the season’s leitmotif… the result was a perverse, audacious marriage of rich and poor… It was just like the royal family (French, Russian, pick another) disguising themselves as peasants in a futile attempt to escape the revolution. And there’s a cautionary tale for our time… The empire was failing, the gold was flaking, but still, the artisans slaved on.”
The ensemble consists of a sheath dress featuring a black satin sleeveless upper panel anchored by a butter yellow plisse skirt covered in an all-over black barbed wire print. The trapeze shaped overlay top is made of an intricate multicolor embroidered navy cotton with natural seashells adorning the collar, and held together with multiple string ties along each side and the center back.
Both pieces are in excellent vintage condition. The dress is labeled a French Size 36, while the overlay top is labeled a French Size 38.
